We have introduced support for receiving SMS messages on VoIP phone numbers. This functionality will work on our hosted VoIP service, Gradwell One, a trunk, or a fax-to-email service.
At present SMS is not supported on ported numbers, non-geographic numbers and international numbers.
Please note that the 02034 number range was not enabled to receive SMS messages when it was created within the National Telephone Numbering Plan. Therefore numbers that start in 02034 may not receive text messages, and unfortunately there is no work around.
When we receive an SMS to one of your phone numbers, there are a number of ways we can forward it to you:
- SMS to a mobile phone
- HTTP POST
One or more of these actions can be defined separately for every incoming phone number on your account.
Setting up forwarding
To tell our system what you want to happen when an SMS message is sent to a phone number on your account, click on the Configure inbound SMS link from the top menu of your control panel.
From here you can configure a delivery option for each PSTN number.
The options that you can configure are:
- Send to destination email(s): select this box if you would like the message to be delivered to the email address of the seven digit extension. If the destination is a queue or hunt group all active members at the time the SMS is sent will receive the message, and if it is a fax-to-email number it will be delivered to the same email address that faxes are delivered to
- Send to SIM Cards: if you have purchased a Gradwell Mobile SIM card this will be selected as default. It will ensure that if you change the routing of your Gradwell Mobile number then text messages will continue to be sent to your mobile as usual
- Send to mobile diverts: if you have a divert number set up on the seven digit extension, it will be shown here. To forward the message to this number, tick this box. If you do not have a divert number set up this field will say "n/a". There will be a charge for each message sent using this option (7p + VAT)
- Send to account email: select this box if you would like the message to be delivered to the master email address for your VoIP account
- Email: use this field if you wish to forward the message to an email address. Please note that you can only add one email address to this field
- PSTN/Mobile number: if you would like to forward the SMS message to a phone number or mobile, enter it here. Please note that there will be a charge for this (7p + VAT)
- HTTP post URL: if you are an advanced user and want to integrate SMS with your own systems, we can post to an HTTP URL
If you wish, you can select multiple options for each number, and the SMS message will be delivered to all of them.
Please note that if no specific action is defined for a number, then the SMS will only be logged on our database with no notification sent to you to let you know that you have a new message. However it will be viewable by clicking the view log link.
Please note that messages sent from T-Mobile to some of our phone numbers will not arrive as an SMS, but will instead be converted to a voice call by T-Mobile, and will be routed like any other voice call. This is unfortunately outside of our control, however if you have a number which suffers from this problem we may be able to provide a replacement number which does not.
Viewing sent and received SMS messages
To view a full list of SMS messages that have been sent or received to a phone number on your account, navigate to Configure Inbound SMS and then click View log alongside the number.
To view a list of messages (both sent and received) from all numbers on your account, click on SMS Overview from the top menu.
You can easily reply to any messages from here, as well as send text messages.
If you are an advanced user and want to integrate SMS with your own systems, we can post to an HTTP URL.
The following post fields will be included:
- originator: This is the sender of the message. For a phone number, it will be in international format, e.g. "441225800800", however the originator may also be an alphanumeric string.
- destination: This is the phone number that the message was sent to, in the same format as originator above.
- message: This is the text of the message.
- iso_time: Timestamp of the message in standard ISO format, e.g. "2010-01-01 15:00:00"
- unix_time: Timestamp of the message as a Unix timestamp, e.g. "1276000974"
